What is a research data journal?

A research data journal is a chronological record of meaningful changes, decisions and next steps connected to a research project. Unlike a general notebook, it preserves what changed in the data, why it changed and which project state the note described.

The research problem

Files preserve content, but filenames rarely preserve the reasoning behind cleaning, recoding, exclusions or handovers. When that reasoning is divided between notebooks, email and memory, returning to a project becomes reconstruction rather than analysis.

How the workflow works

  1. Write one short memo when a meaningful change is made.
  2. Connect the memo to the relevant project state, file and optional code revision.
  3. Use the journal, timeline and search to recover the decision later.
